I went from “let me just try it out” to “PLEASE CA I went from “let me just try it out” to “PLEASE CAN I HAVE THE EPIDURAL” real quick! I believe I told the anesthesiologist that he was my absolute favorite person on the planet post said giant needle jammed in my back 💉 (All jokes aside, they were very gentle and it really didn’t hurt going in at all lol. Plus that sweet, sweet relief is just truly top tier, unmatched, 10/10 would recommend to a friend 🩷)
I didn’t think the idea of birth trauma applied to I didn’t think the idea of birth trauma applied to me. My baby wasn’t a preemie, I didn’t hemorrhage or need an emergency c-section. I smiled, I laughed, I even enjoyed my birth experience until I didn’t. Sure, I cried a lot too because of what happened immediately after, but ✨postpartum hormone crash✨ and all that. I always trusted that she was going to be okay because our team was amazing, so I thought I was f i n e. But I didn’t realize that birth trauma doesn’t necessarily always look capital t, Traumatic.

Sometimes it looks like missing out on golden hour and forever mourning that you’ll never get it back. Or pumping alone in your hospital bed while your baby is 2 floors away. Or sleeping next to an empty bassinet for 3 weeks. Or rocking your baby to sleep at home 2 months after discharge, silently sobbing because you still can’t get over the gut-wrenching guilt of having had to leave her alone in plastic box for even one minute even though it was saving her life.

This week is Birth Trauma Awareness Week and I wanted to share a little of our experience just in case it helps even one person realize, like I finally did, that birth trauma doesn’t always look like a dramatic Grey’s Anatomy scene. Sometimes it just looks like 23 unending days spent in a NICU, healing in an uncomfortable hospital chair, trying to bond with your baby through tubes and wires, and memorizing alarms you will never be able to unhear. 🩷
